Gate Operator Q&A with Seth Montgomery

Looking for a new gate operator system or replacement parts, but having trouble finding helpful information on the web? Not to mention the time it takes to decipher through all the technical-talk just to find yourself back at square one.

Seth Montgomery of PSS Store helps to address some of the most common questions asked by customers seeking new access control systems and parts. This Q&A is compiled with both basic and advanced questions commonly asked by real PSS Store customers. Enjoy!

Are all gate operators created equal?

No, all gate operators are not created the same. Each gate opener is built differently to meet the requirements needed to move different types of gates that have different weights.

How should I compare different gate openers?

Compare them by the type of gate you have. Is it a swing gate or slide gate? How much does it weigh? Does it swing into the property or out? Is the gate hung on a post or pillar?  Do you need remote access or emergency access to the gate?

What should I know when shopping for a gate operator?

Choose a reputable manufacturer and find out what is the warranty period is for the operator. Is it a commercial grade unit? If so, the warranty in most cases can be 5 to 7 years long as compared to a residential warranty which can be 3 years. Also, will you need a professional to install the gate system? In most states the contractor installing the operator is responsible for at least one year on the labor performed.

What is the best way to find all of the components I need to install a fully functional operator? (Are their kits or packages available?)

Call the experts at Perimeter Security Systems 800-676-4909 - we can assist you in setting up the proper system for your gate. With 40 years in the business, we can give you the best advice for the different components needed to make your gate system safe, secure and reliable.

Do you recommend customers to install a gate operator themselves or consult a professional?

Some gate operating devices are built for “Do it yourself” applications. Operators such as the Liftmaster LA412 swing gate operator is a solar powered unit and has bolt-on brackets. Homeowners can easily install this unit themselves in a few hours.

Most gate operators required welded bracket and high voltage power that always should be installed by the professionals.

Where can I find easy sources for learning how to install a fully functional gate operator?

Every manufacturer includes gate operator installation manuals with the product. You may also find installation instructions online at each manufacturer’s website.

What should I know about how much voltage my gate will require?

There are many different voltages required for the different types of motors the open and close gates. Each manufacturer designs there operator differently and should be consulted for power requirements.

If a power outage should occur, what are my options with an automatic gate operator?

A battery back-up system is the best way to make sure you can open during power outages. As an example, a Viking model L-3slide gate operator has a 24vdc motor and a battery back-up system built into the operator that allows for access during outages.

If a unit does not have a built-in back-up, there will always be a manual release. Please consult your manufacturer’s operating manual for manual gate release instructions.

What are the options on how gates can be opened for vehicle entry?

There are too many options to list here, but some examples are remote controls, keypad, phone systems, exit probes, exit loops, and many more.  Call us at PSSstore.net 800-676-4909, we can assist you in setting up the proper system for your gate.

What are my options for troubleshooting gate operator issues?

Troubleshooting a gate operator is like being a doctor. You check for symptoms to the problem, then treat those symptoms. I recommend calling a professional when issues occur. With any electro-mechanical devices there are inherent risks when troubleshooting, such as electrical shock or mechanical pinch-points that can cause injuries.

Can my existing gate be converted to an automatic gate opener?

Yes all gates can be converted into an automatic gate system with the proper set up. If you need help determining how you gate will be converted, simply take a picture or two, and send to sales@pssstore.net We may be able to help you determine how to make that happen.

What type of safety features come with most gate operators to prevent accidents?

All gate systems come with a built-in overload devices, meaning if the gate hits something it will overload and stop. This should be the last line of protection. There are many devices that will prevent a gate from hitting something before it stops line photo beams, safety loops, and rubber gate bumpers.

How reliable and effective are solar powered operators?

Solar powered gate operators are very reliable if you install the proper solar system and batteries. We like to increase the size of the solar panels to make sure the batteries are properly charged at nightfall. If the batteries are properly sized for the devices running all night, then there should not be a problem running your solar powered gate system.

Are electrical components to gate operators water-proof?

Yes, if those components are housed properly in the junction boxes and gate operator housings the manufacturers provide, then the gate operators are water-proof. This equipment is built for outdoor use. Please double check your sprinklers and make sure they are not spraying directly on the equipment. This can cause condensation that can build up over time and may ruin your system.

How often should I replace major components of gate operators?

If maintained properly, components can last for years and years. Please use a professional service company to determine when something should be replaced.
