5 Funny Outdated "Security" Gates You Have to See

Over our many years of installing and repairing access control systems we have seen technology advance dramatically. Unfortunately, not everyone keeps their “security” gates up-to-date, while others never seem to put enough thought into installing gate operators in the first place.
Here’s a look at five security gates that leave a lot to be desired in the way of access control.

1.    Improperly Placed Automatic Gates – Where a gate is placed is possibly the most important decision a property owner has to make. Clearly the people that installed this barrier arm gate didn’t get the memo that the middle of a parking lot isn’t the most appropriate spot. In their defense it is possible that the configurations of the area had changed since the gate was installed. But when that’s the case it’s time to update your gate operators.

2.    Inadequate Security Equipment – If you’re going to make the investment in an access control system, it’s worth it to make sure the equipment can meet your security needs. Arms that aren’t long enough, gates without complete fencing, etc. do nothing but tell intruders that your security system isn’t up to par. If a piece of equipment is damaged (which could be the case here) it should be replaced immediately.

3.    Unnecessary Security or double layer of protection? – If the first thing you wondered after looking at this picture was “What is the barrier arm gate being used for,” we’ll explain. Although this looks like excessive security, this set up actually prevents unwanted tailgaters from entering you property and is a pretty common access control for high end properties. Most swing gates stay open longer creating an opportunity for unauthorized guest to enter. Most people often mistake this for an excess of security, however we actually seen this work well for some communities.

4.    Not Taking a Look at the Entire Security Picture – One of the biggest problems property owners make is not looking at the whole picture when they are putting together their security system. This picture is a perfect example of how serious the oversights can get. Professional security gate installers can help you excess all your needs and provide advice on what is needed to keep your property properly secured.

5.    Silly Signage – Adding signs to gate operators can be a good idea if it’s done right. Confusing or unnecessary signage can actually do more harm than good by distracting drivers. Before spending part of your security budget on a sign consider whether the signage is actually needed or if the message you’re trying to get across is already clear. Also keep in mind the purpose of gate operators is to limit access and keep people out if they aren’t supposed to be in an area. The last thing you want to do is fill strangers in on how the automatic gate works so they know how to bypass the system.
